Come join us at Elitch Gardens on Friday, August 08, 2014, for a morning of technical seminars, and an afternoon of fun, courtesy of RMOUG and additional sponsors. Bring your colleagues, bring your family, bring your desire to learn, and reboot.

Agenda:
8:30 am – 9:00 Registration and Continental Breakfast

9:00 am – 9:15 am RMOUG Business and Welcome

9:15-10:15 Performance Innovation with Database In-Memory
Enterprises are always looking for ways to make business decisions more quickly. Oracle Database In-Memory is a solution for accelerating database queries and enabling businesses to make better and faster decisions. Oracle’s unique approach leverages a new in-memory column store format to speed up analytic, data warehousing, and reporting workloads. Existing applications automatically and transparently take advantage of in-memory processing without requiring any changes or without losing any existing Oracle database capabilities. With Oracle Database In-Memory, everything just works faster. Learn more about the Oracle Database In-Memory option and how you can make better and faster database-driven business decisions.

10:30-11:30 What’s New in Database Consolidation
Oracle Database 12c introduces a new multitenant architecture that offers greater utilization and scalability of server resources through simplified database consolidation onto private clouds. It fully complements proven database technologies such as Real Application Clusters, and effectively enables customers to manage many databases as one, without the need to change existing applications. In addition, Oracle Multitenant offers very fast provisioning and cloning of databases, rapid database patching and upgrades, and secure isolation of data. During this session, we’ll examine Oracle Multitenant in some detail and explain how this new architecture works.

Presentations

8:15 am – 9:15 am
Deploying and Developing Application Express with Oracle Database 12c
David Peake, Product Manager @ Oracle

Learn how you can take full advantage of the new Oracle Database 12c Multitenant Architecture with various deployment options for Application Express. This new architecture provides great flexibility and will change the way you manage your Application Express environments for development, test and production. This session will also cover new capabilities defined within Application Express to take advantage of other Oracle Database 12c features.

9:25 am -10:25 am
DBaaS- Database as a Service in a DBA’s World
Kellyn Pot’Vin, Sr. Technical Consultant and Oracle ACE Director @ Enkitec

DBaaS, (Database as a Service) is a newer EM12c cloud feature that has many DBAs scratching their heads and wondering what it’s all about and how it fits in their changing world as we head to the cloud. DBaaS, especially with Database 12c will have DBAs focus less on building databases,  but more on managing cloud environments. The DBA will only set up resource allocation, privileges and limits for users to request databases via the EM12c Self Service Portal. This session will offer the DBA the opportunity to get a clear view of this important aspect of our future in the cloud.

10:35 am -11:35 am
Considerations for Enterprise Mobile Application Development
Greg Opie, Director Solution Architecture, ECS Team

Mobile applications are widely accepted and used by consumers on smart mobile devices and the trend is rapidly moving into enterprise applications as well. However, the mobile application itself is only part of the solution. This presentation will cover important considerations for mobile development, from the mobile application through middleware and to the source application, followed by examples of projects developed with Oracle SOA Suite and Oracle ADF Mobile.

11:45 am – 12:45 pm
Relaxed Reporting – Tips & Tricks on Building Dynamic Financial Reports
Joe Monteith, Consultant, The Bean Consulting Group

Would you like to meet complex HFR reporting needs in a sustainable and maintainable manner? If so, this session is for you. You will learn best practices in financial and regulatory reporting, the value of using math and text functions to build complex conditions and the power of conditional formatting and suppression. We will discuss 13-month rolling balance sheets, butterfly income statements, and how to leverage report objects to reduce maintenance.

Presentations

8:15 am – 9:15 am
Essbase Calculations – Observations from the Road
Chris Chase, Managing Partner @ The Bean Consulting Group

With nearly 25 years experience in software and database technology I thought I had seen all that programming had to offer; then I discovered Essbase.  Learn some interesting observations regarding Essbase calculations accumulated over nearly 10 years of Hyperion implementations.  We will discuss aggregations, allocations, eliminations, and driver-based calculations, commands and functions specific to Hyperion Planning, and some of the more confounding aspects such as block creation and cross dimensional operators

9:25 am -10:25 am
Sherlock Holmes for the DBA
Kellyn Pot’Vin, Senior Technical Consultant @ Enkitec

The DBA has numerous tools, some requiring additional licenses, some standard to any environment. When problems arise, often the administrator is expected to, not only identify, but also correct the problem without impact and in short order. This presentation goes over a number of common Oracle errors and performance issues, showing what tools, tracing to AWR reports, along with how to utilize these to quickly assess a strategy to address problems when they develop to lessen the challenge to managing these types of environments.

Attendees will leave the session with a better understanding of trouble-shooting techniques and when to use what features, tools and reports to address issues.

10:35 am -11:35 am
Introduction to SOA and Oracle SOA Suite
Brian Statkevicus, Senior Consultant @ ECS Team and Greg Opie, Director of Architecture @ ECS Team

Almost everyone has heard of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).  Some people can accurately describe what it is and isn’t.  This introductory session will cover:

•              What is SOA?
•              What are the business problems solved by implementing SOA?
•              Oracle’s SOA Suite
•              Demo of a sample business process using SOA Suite
•              SOA Case Study

11:45 am – 12:45 pm
CTO’s Perspective on Adding Geo-spatial and Location-Based Information to Your Data
Bradley Brown, CEO/CTO @  InteliVideo

There is a considerable amount of free geo-spatial data available from the government and open source groups.  This information can be quite helpful at providing more information about location-based data.  For example, if you’re a property management company and you wanted to know close each of your properties are for anything from grocery stores to railroad tracks to flood plains, all of this information is available.  If you wanted to know which homes are on a specific golf course, this data is available for free too.

In this presentation, Brad will share what geo-spatial data is available, where you can download the data, and what you might use the information for.  You can also create your own layers of information and merge this into your queries.  All of this can be done using an Oracle database (even the free version of Oracle) – i.e. without a mapping tool like ESRI.  You can easily overlay this information onto Google maps or Google Earth.  Brad will share PL/SQL code that will extract shapes into KML

APEX Admin and Install Tips and Techniques

Dan Hotka, Author/Instructor/Oracle ACE Director

This presentation discusses various installation and administrative tasks associated with the Application Express 4.1 (APEX) Oracle web-based development environment.  Dan discusses new APEX 4.1 features as well as using SQL Developer to aid in the administration and deployment of APEX applications.

9:50 am – 11:50 am

How ASH works and how to use it.

John Bereniewicz and Graham Wood, ORACLE Corporation

“Active Session History” (ASH) is a rich historical record sampled from activity within the database at the level of individual sessions, capturing such important information as timestamp, user identity, the name of server from which the session was connected, the SQL statement executing, the PL/SQL module from which the SQL was executing, and the event and event parameters upon which the session was waiting.  ASH is a snapshot of what is happening in the database, captured automatically for later diagnosis.

Studies included will range from simple to complex.
