Hello Karen,

I don't really know of any good documents custom 10g application. Only information on Web Services/SOA in iAS 11g and SOA Gateway in Oracle EBS r12. From my experience this is much different then the Ariba cXML spec, which provides a spec and the vendors like Ariba have their own security requirements.

It really depends on how much integration is happening with the Punchout Application.

There are two sides to this, the purchaser and the supplier.

Either one should use all Requests in SSL (HTTPS). It may not be required on the other end but, it is good practice. If you are the application submitting the request you will need to implement an Oracle Wallet and import the destination sites SSL Certificate. Ariba and Sciquest will both require it.

Using the DB may seem like an easy way to implement but, I would start with mapping out all of the Use Cases with integration points. Is this one REQUEST/RESPONSE and the Use Case is done or for a user to complete a Use Case are there many interactions to complete?

If you have several interactions the 10g database and XML parsers are not the best for consuming web services. Especially when compared to the parsers in java or .Net. Things like special characters in your data can through off the whole transaction.

Is there a good article or whitepaper that explains how to do this simple process using predominately Oracle components? We run sql monitoring reports on some of our longer running queries. We use the timestamp datatype in our database(11.2.0.2). In our sql monitoring reports we see bind variables captured for the timestamp datatype that we are unsure how to decode into a human readable form. Here are some example bind variables from one of our reports.

Oracle Mechanisms – Agenda This course is new for 2013 and is, in effect, a walk through the book Oracle Core. The two day event covers the core mechanisms of how the central portion of the basic database engine works. There are eight chapters in the book, which are reflected in the eight topic headings listed below; and the material presented in the course of the two days will follow this pattern. Unlike previous courses, however, which had a fixed timetable and were strictly set to four sessions of equal length each day, this course will have a flexible timetable where the number and duration of pauses will depend on the amount of interaction from the attendees. There will, however, be a lunch break in the middle of the day, and at least one break mid-morning and another mid-afternoon. Throughout the sessions we will always try to focus on the questions – how does knowing this information help me either make the application more efficient, or reduce the amount of maintenance work I need to do.
Topic 1	Overview. A brief introduction to the principal files used in an Oracle database, the key processes and what they do with those file, and the way that Oracle uses memory.

Topic 2	Redo and Undo The mechanisms that Oracle uses to change data, and reverse out change. Redo change vectors and undo records. How the redo and undo mechanisms allow Oracle to increase scalability and reduce blocking. Why we have redo log files but undo tablespaces. The three functions of undo.

Topic 3	Transactions and Consistency Why writers don’t block readers. Internals of the Undo Segment – undo segment headers and the transaction table. Chaining undo records in undo blocks. Data segment headers and the Interested Transaction List. Commits and the options for cleanout. Two forms of Oracle error ORA-01555. The special handling for LOBs.

Topic 4	Latches Mutexes and Locks Why locks are different from latches and mutexes. Methods of using memory: arrays, pointers, hash tables and linked lists. Shared memory and the threat of lost updates. How latches and mutexes protect memory locations from concurrent overwrites. An example of the interaction of latches hash tables, and linked lists – the library cache. Locks as mechanisms for sharing and queueing. How queueing mechanisms lead to deadlocks. Internal structures used for locks. Some common lock types. A graphic explanation of v$lock. How Oracle also uses locks in the library cache.

Topic 5	The Buffer Cache Layers of memory structures. Granules and buffer pools, buffers and buffer headers. Working data sets and the database writer(s). Buffer re-use and the LRU/Touch Count algorithm. Finding the right buffer – the cache buffers chains. Latching and pinning to protect shared memory. Reading data blocks into the buffer, and the creation and use of read consistent copies of blocks..

Topic 6	Writing and Recovery The main write I/O activity. How DBWR and LGWR work individually, and how they co-operate. The various types of checkpoints and how they anticipate recovery scenarios and minimize the work needed to recover. Ancillary I/O activity – archiving, flashback logging, and change tracking – and how the range of recovery options affects the ongoing I/O load.

Topic 7	Parsing and Optimising Note particularly that this chapter is not about the arithmetic of the cost-based optimizer, it is about the various structures in the shared memory that are manipulated due to a parse call. How much does Oracle need to know to “understand” an SQL statement, and how is this information handled. What does the shared pool look like, and how does Oracle deal with loading and accessing all the pieces of information it needs to parse and optimize a statement. We start with memory granules to build the shared pool then consider the finer levels of granularity – the sub-pools and “durations”. How does the dictionary cache work, how does the library cache work – and what is a cursor. What is the difference between a parent cursor and a child cursor. What is the difference between an “open” cursor, and a “pinned” cursor.

Topic 8	RAC and Ruin A very brief look at how Oracle addresses the issues raised when multiple machines are all trying to share the same database. How can we share objects safely when the “shared memory” is distributed across several machines. The global resource directory; master resources and shadow resources and their role in crash recovery. A couple of special cases to consider when designing for RAC.

I don’t use SQL Developer much but have been using it with JDK 7 for a while and even though it’s not supported, I haven’t seen major problems. However, I’m only doing basic stuff in there so it’s not a full-fledged test.

Eric is spot on with how SQL Developer works and the ability to change which JRE is used. Ron’s comments are interesting and IMHO the co-worker is probably better sticking with 6 (since it’s supported) despite the message from Oracle.

I am currently working on this and JDK 1.7 does not work with Forms/Reports 10g. You have to uninstall JDK 1.7 and reinstall JDK 1.6 to get either IE 9 or Mozilla 19 to run Forms/Reports 10g. At least on my laptop that is what I had to do, which is an HP DV7 Notebook 64bit machine running Window 7 premier.

There is supposed to be a fix working with the EBS running 10g Forms/Reports but I haven't gotten that tested yet. Can let anyone know my results if they're interested, just reply to let me know and I will post it here.

I think this is just a reference to Java 6 in general. If you are using the Java JRE that comes with the Oracle 11 client you will be fine unless you encounter a bug. Not sure about the compatibility of SqlDeveloper

with Java 7, If that is what you are asking, my guess is that it would work just fine as they keep deprecated classes around for some time. I’ m sure that Oracle will either begin to package future releases with a newer Java, or perhaps not. They are usually

way behind. BTW – in troubleshooting the issue of SqlDeveloper asking the first time where Java is on your machine (So that I could automate client pushes) I found the place that they store the path to the JRE. I recall it being in Sqldeveloper.conf. So,

you could have multiple versions of Java on the machine and change which version SqlDeveloper looks uses.

Hope that helps a little.

Lots of ‘gotchas’ on all these new versions and their incompatibilities, aren’t there? We have clients still running IE6 machines just so they can continue to run 10g webforms.

This release is the last of publicly available JDK 6 Updates. Oracle recommends that users migrate to JDK 7 in order to continue receiving public updates and security enhancements. All JDK 6 releases up to and including 6u43 will be moved to Java Archive, where they will remain available but will not receive updates. For users who require continued access to JDK 6 updates, long term support is available through the Java SE Support program.

[techies] Oracle and AD

Hey folks,

We are looking at using AD to authenticate our Oracle Windows client connections. Our RDBMS platform is Red Hat. I’ve been talking to Oracle about this and the answer seems to be buying Directory Services Plus and using one of 4 possible combinations of OID and OVD with a side of WebLogics as well, and purchasing Advanced Security to be able to use Kerberos. Seems like a lot of convoluted stuff to do what I want, namely authentication and password management. I don’t even want to necessarily manage roles in OID or AD, and I’m thinking that once I go the directory route I won’t even have a choice to do roles in the DB. Many (non-Oracle) products seems to integrate fairly seamlessly. This one is frustrating.

Does anyone have some practical experience with this or good advice? I would think this is a common problem but I don’t see a good solution out there.

I wanted to thank Tim for the reminder on the OTN session at TD2013! This is a great deal.

One more question for folks out there. I am seriously considering taking the Oracle Java SE 6 Associate Certification Value Package at a cost of about $1100 for the self study course which includes the following:

ePractice: Java Standard Edition 5 and 6, Certified Associate Exam (QUANTITY: 1)

Java EE Platform Overview for Managers Self-Study Course (QUANTITY: 1)

OU Java, Solaris, and other Sun Technology Retake Exam eVoucher (QUANTITY: 1)

Fundamentals of the Java Programming Language, Java SE 6, Self-Study Course (QUANTITY: 1)

For anyone out there that has taken this certification I would appreciate your feedback. Also for any hiring managers out there I would appreciate your feedback on whether or not you consider a certificate in your hiring decisions.

One last item for any Oracle employees and/or associates dealing with Oracle OTN, are you aware of any available discounts for taking certifications that I may qualify for? Being unemployed my funds are limited so I want to direct them towards a positive outcome and thought it wouldn't hurt to ask if there were any discounts available.

I am looking into adding to my skills to increase my marketability on the job market as a developer. Two areas that I have noticed that are in demand on the job market is Java and ADF. So I wanted to run some questions by everyone on the RMOUG Misc and Tech list to get some help from my professional peers on getting training.

There appear to be a lot of jobs asking for both Java and ADF experience so I am targeting training on both of these technologies. However any suggestions on other technology skills that are in demand on the job market with quick training and at reasonable cost that I could obtain in the next month would be greatly appreciated.

1) Are there certifications available for training in both Java and ADF?

a) if so what is the associated cost and do they improve your marketability?

2) Can anyone recommend where to get great training at a reasonable cost? (I am currently unemployed so I hope to maximize both)

Training can be local here or online and would need to be obtainable in the next month as I hope to be employed soon.

Specificly I am looking for training that would start at an entry level for an experienced Oracle UI/Database Developer. Specific skills I have are listed below:

5+ years in Forms, Reports, PL/SQL, TOAD, SQL

1 - 2 years in Financials, Designer, Data Warehousing, SQL Developer, Discern Visual Developer, HTML/CSS, JSP, and other misc areas
