8:30am – 10:30am Innovation, Oracle Cloud with Apps Case Study, Big Data and the Internet of Things Preparing for the Future of IT

This presentation will cover Oracle’s Acceleration, especially with the Oracle Cloud, and the Cycles of Innovation in the world.  We’ll look at a case study of an implementation of Oracle ERP Cloud Financials integrated with on premise Supply Chain Application.  We’ll then look at the current Acceleration of the Cloud, the Big Data Revolution and some of the Big Data Solutions out there including Oracle’s Big Data Solution.  We will review the role that both Google and Facebook have played in the Big Data Ecosystem and also how other NoSQL databases like Cassandra and MongoDB fit in.  We’ll then look at the Internet of Things (IOT) which will drive Big Data and the Cloud even Faster.  Lastly, we’ll briefly look at what the Future will bring with 64-bit and 128-bit (robotics/implants).

Session 2:

9:50am – 10:50am The Best Oracle Database 12c R1 & R2 New Features

This presentation will look at which 12c Release 1 and Release 2 new features should be investigated for use.  Some of the features that will be covered will be related to the DBA, but there will also those that focus on the developer.  There will be simple examples (such as a quick example using pluggable databases) to show the basic functionality of the new features:

– Invisible Columns

– Multiple indexes on the same Column

– Adaptive Execution Plans

– Runaway query Management

– Change Table Compression at import Time

– Create Views as Tables

– Online Move Partition

– Partial Indexes for Partitioned Table

Summer 2016 QEW Presentations:

8:45am – 9:45am “Analyze This! Practical Examples of Oracle Analytical Functions”

– Jim Czuprynski, Onx Enterprise Solutions

Session Abstract: If you’ve ever struggled with a particularly complex reporting request from an applications developer – for instance, returning just a specific set of rows from a subset of rows already extracted, or creating the equivalent of a Microsoft Excel pivot table, or producing a report with subtotals and subsections just like a spreadsheet – then this session is just right for you. We’ll demonstrate the basics of how to produce these complex output matrices with just a few calls to Oracle 12cR1 analytic functions and discuss how you applications developers (as well as Oracle DBAs) can leverage them for deeper insights into your database, and the performance of its application workloads. The presentation will offer real-world examples of how best to deploy these features, including detailed sample code that you can put to immediate use.

Objective #1: The attendee will understand how to leverage 12c Database’s analytic functions to create complex reports with less tortuous SQL, thereby potentially improving statement performance.

Objective #2: The attendee will discover how to apply analytic functions to obtain new viewpoints from the data hidden within the data, using everything from Big Data to database performance metrics as a target.

9:50am – 10:50am“Migrating and Upgrading to Oracle Database 12c Quickly With Near-Zero Downtime”

– Jim Czuprynski, Onx Enterprise Solutions

Session Abstract: While many IT organizations appear to still be waiting for Oracle Database 12c Release 2 (12cR2) to migrate their pre-12c databases to the next version, it’s never too early to begin planning the best way to make that transition a reality. This session will therefore demonstrate real-world examples of how to use the latest database migration and upgrade techniques to quickly and safely move your pre-12c Oracle databases to Oracle 12cR1 … with some hints on even easier methods that are likely to be available in Oracle 12cR2.

Objective #1: The attendee will understand how to plan for an effective migration for pre-12c databases to a 12c database environment with minimum appropriate application down time – the “window of inopportunity” -while guaranteeing against the loss of any data during the migration process.

Objective #2: The attendee will be able to choose which migration mechanism – RMAN+TTS, XTTS, or CPT – is the best choice for migration her pre-12c database to Oracle Database 12c, and how to leverage each migration technique for an effective, safe migration regardless of differences between source and destination platform, database version, or OS.

10:55am – 11:55am “Is Oracle 12c Making You Wait? Discover How to Identify, Prioritize and Solve the Most Important Wait Events– Janis Griffin, SolarWinds

Session Abstract: There are over 1200 wait events in Oracle 12c, but there are only 10 (in my experience) that are seen often. If you can learn these 10 wait events, what causes them and their solutions, you will be ahead of the performance analysis game. The list of 10 wait events to be discussed came from over 100 consulting engagements with customers, so come find out what they are and improve your performance troubleshooting skills.

Objective 1: Learn the top 10 wait events
Objective 2: What are the causes of these events
Objective 3: How do you fix these waits

12:00am – 1:00pm – “Oracle’s Adaptive Optimizer, Finally Learning from Its Mistakes!”

– Janis Griffin, SolarWinds

Session Abstract: With each new release of Oracle, the optimizer undergoes changes usually for the better, but sometimes there are unexpected side effects as well. This presentation will explore all of the new optimizer features, adaptive plans/statistics, and the changes to SQL plan management. Several case studies will show how it works, so you can quickly take advantage of the changes while making sure you remain stable in the transition.

Does your performance tuning need a 12-step program?

Performance tuning can be complex. It’s often hard to know which knob to turn or button to press to get the biggest performance boost. In this presentation, Janis Griffin, database performance evangelist, SolarWinds, will detail 12 steps to quickly identify performance issues and resolve them. Attendees at this session will learn how to:

  • Quickly fine tune a SQL statement
  • Identify performance inhibitors to help avoid future performance issues
  • Recognize and understand how new Oracle features can change and/or support different execution plans
