Do you lack stability in your life? Especially when it comes to Oracle Execution Plans? Thursday, December 1st 2016 at 10am MST Unexpected changes in execution plans can have disastrous effects on database performance. Changes, such as optimizer versions and statistics, schema/metadata definitions, and system settings, can cause a plan to change, often not for the better. In this presentation, Janis Griffin, SolarWinds database performance evangelist, will explore the history of plan management and present a deep dive into several features that can improve plan stability.

Data Warehousing in the Real World, Kent Graziano, Snowflake Computing Thu, Dec 1, 2016 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM MST At a former health-care client, we were not able to implement a pure Data Vault 2.0 architecture. Instead, we had to evolve a hybrid solution that uses Type 2 persistent stage tables we tie together using standard Hub and Link structures along with a Key Map table. While we have been able to utilize DV 2.0 concepts such as MD5 hash keys, in order to avoid joins in loading the stage tables we had to come up with a way to resolve the business keys further into the process. We will show you our solution and discuss the pros and cons of our approach.

In this presentation we will teach you how to properly virtualize Monster VM/Databases. We will discuss why you virtualize, installation issues, how to Architect for performance, the storage layer, the processor, Memory considerations, the network layer. Topics include NUMA, Memory reservations, how to avoid common mistakes. Lesson learned here help you optimize any workload you are virtualizing. With Special emphasis on Monster VM’s.

How to Make FDMEE-Triggered Essbase Calculation and Partition Scripts Targeted to Current FDMEE Load, B. Ash, EPM Clarity Tue, Dec 6, 2016 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM MST Optimize FDMEE performance with Essbase by making all your operations more focused. When your customer’s requirements ask you to use FDMEE to load over 800,000 records per entity for one month, convert YTD to MTD, convert local currency to USD, and then push to an ASO reporting cube, it’s time to time to break out the big guns. Large data volumes or not, why not parameterize ALL your FDMEE-driven calc scripts based on the entities that are in a given load file? Why not do the same with a partition script that refreshes the data to a reporting cube after it has been loaded and calc’d in BSO? In this live, hands-on demo, we will use Jython to identify the distinct entities in a given data load (TDATASEG table) and pass these entities to a MaxL script to manage the focus of the calcs and partition scripts. This functionality is live at Cigna.

Using DevOps for an Oracle Data Warehouse Thu, Dec 8, 2016 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM MST Using DevOps for an Oracle Data Warehouse Data Warehousing and many areas of analytics and performance management within the Oracle stack can take advantage of source control management, continuous integration, and DevOps processes. Though these historically database object artifact silos often find some means for cooperative development, migration, and release cycles, they do not necessarily meet standards proven and approved for standardized software development life cycles or agile deployments. Your Data Warehouse lifecycle management may not follow best practices or even align with the corporate standard for application development elsewhere within the organization. This session takes into account Data Warehousing design, development, and lifecycle management and provides a beginner’s introduction on how and where source control, continuous integration, and DevOps, can be used in an organization to better organize and develop within an Oracle Data Warehouse paradigm.

2016 CodeTalk Series- NoPL/SQL and Thick Database Methods: Which One Needs a Bigger Database Server? C. Saxon and T. Koppelaars Fri, Dec 9, 2016 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM MST Toon Koppelaars recently conducted an experiment comparing the performance of different ways of implementing a specific task. The NoPL/SQL approach treats the database as no more than a persistence layer, using only naive single-row SQL statements; it implements all business logic outside of it. The thick database approach treats the database as a processing engine; it uses a combination of sophisticated set-based SQL statements and PL/SQL to implement all business logic inside it. In this session, Chris and Toon investigate Toon’s findings and discuss their implications for database development. This session is a must-watch for anyone who builds applications using Oracle Database.

Using R to Clean and Transform Small Data Wednesday, 14-December 2016, 1:00pm MST Track: Analyze & Interpret Big data yes, dark data perhaps but small data – really? Small data is high value data which is often the key numbers or performance indicators that are used by senior management to guide the business. It has been collected at great effort and expense but usually supplied in format that is not conducive to analysis, reporting or visualisation. Using a few examples based on real life case studies we’ll look how R can transform and clean this data. This is a practical session with lots of example of R code. So if the veracity, variety and value of data are more important aspects than volume and velocity then this session will be of interest to you.

Visualizing Multiple Time Series with R in Power BI Wednesday, 14-December 2016, 2:00pm MST Track: Visualize & Inform Power BI and R together offer an enjoyable way for business users to quickly consume complex analytical insights. The open source Correlates of War (COW) project has been gathering datasets that track all militarized conflicts since the early 1800s along with other time-indexed factors like religion, ideology, and economic power. Do these time series correlate in meaningful ways? What would it look like to visually tell the story of 200 years of global conflict? Using a tabular model linked to these online csv files, I provide examples of where out-of-the-box visualizations in Power BI suffice and where custom modeling and visualization in R get us further.
